About This Video

If you own a home (or even rent), one of the easiest maintenance wins you can do to save money is swapping your HVAC/furnace filter on schedule. In this video I walk you through how to find your air handler/furnace, where the filter usually sits (right at the return, before the blower motor), and how the airflow actually moves: air gets pulled in from the house through the return vent, passes through the filter, then the blower pushes it back out after heating or cooling. The biggest mistake I see people make is pulling the filter without shutting the system off, or putting the new one in backwards. I show you how to turn the unit off safely (switch on the unit, thermostat to OFF, or breaker), then how to check the arrow on the filter so it points toward the air handler/blower. I also talk about picking the right size (like 16x25x1 or 20x25x1) and why I stick around a MERV 8/9 range—going super high (MERV 15/16) can get restrictive and make your system work harder. Last tip: write the date on the new filter and set a phone reminder (I use Siri) so you don’t forget.
