About This Video

In this video I put the original Apple AirTag next to the all-new AirTag 2 and break down what’s actually new—because at first glance, they look exactly the same. I walk you through setup step-by-step (it’s basically identical to the original): pull the battery tab, bring your iPhone close, and pair it. If the pop-up doesn’t show up, I show you the quick way I did it—jump into the Find My app, hit the plus button, and add an AirTag from there. Then I get into the upgrades that matter: the AirTag 2 has the second-gen ultra wideband chip for up to 50% more range on Precision Finding (you’ll need an iPhone 15 or newer, and for Apple Watch you’ll want Series 9/Ultra 2 or newer). It also has upgraded Bluetooth to help it play nicer with the Find My network, a speaker that’s about 50% louder (I tested both in my couch), and it’s still IP67. I also did a real-world hide-and-seek test out by my shed to see how quickly each one locks on. My takeaway: Apple keeping the price at $29 (or $99 for a 4-pack) is nice, but you’ll probably find deals on the original. If you rely on Precision Finding, the AirTag 2 is a legit improvement and it feels noticeably faster, but it’s more of a “nice to have” upgrade depending on what you track.
