About This Video

A good design is always improving—or it needs to be replaced—so in this Christmas build I took what we did last year and leveled it up. We attached our LED bars to the sides of the wooden A-frame trees, swapped the extra wooden trees for green trees, and wrapped another 1,000 LEDs around them. That gave me three independent lighting “looks” on stage: the wooden trees, the pixel bars, and the green trees. I like having more options than I really need because it lets songs build with intentionality and gives you moments where a specific look can shine. I walk through how I physically built and documented the wooden LED trees (the notes matter if you want precision), why addressable LEDs are a totally different world than normal Christmas lights, and how I’m pushing video content to thousands of pixels. On the control side, I’m running Resolume Arena as the brain and sending Art-Net to four ENTTEC OCTO mk2 controllers—because once you do the math on 5,420 LEDs (over 16,000 channels / ~32 universes), you realize you need the right tools. I also show how I organized content into groups in Resolume, used external audio FFT for kick-drum pulsing (with a fun X32 mix-bus trick), and made tweaks for a better on-camera experience behind the podium.
