About This Video

BitFocus Companion 4.0 is here, and it keeps changing how we do live production—especially in the church tech world—because it gives you simple, reliable “buttons” to control almost anything from a Stream Deck. In this video I walk you through a true beginner start in 2025: what Companion is, why it’s so popular (free + open source), how it integrates with Stream Deck hardware, and how I use it in real ministry production. At my church we use Companion to do things like turn the projector on/off, recall PTZ camera presets, and even control our ATEM from front of house. I start from a fresh install (Companion 4.0.2 in my case), show you the launcher settings, and then jump into the browser-based GUI where connections and modules live. From there, I connect to ProPresenter by enabling Network + Remote inside ProPresenter, setting a password, and entering the IP/port in Companion. Then I build my first buttons—using press actions to switch ProPresenter Looks (default, worship, sermon)—and I show why feedbacks are such a big deal: the button color can change automatically based on which Look is active. Finally, I plug in a Stream Deck XL over USB, confirm it shows up under Surfaces, and demonstrate how everything stays synced between the on-screen grid and the physical controller. Companion is just way more powerful than the native Stream Deck software right now, and this is a great foundation to start building your own church production control system.
