By removing those details, the dress is greatly improved, but then I try to add some colour and that’s when things go a bit sideways. About This Video

In this video I’m refashioning a dress for Frocktails in Victoria, and it’s one of my favourite kinds of upcycles: the base garment is actually really good quality with great structure… it’s just hiding under some truly weird details. Think: a huge collar and huge sleeves. So I start by stripping back what isn’t working, because honestly, removing the distracting stuff is often the fastest way to make a thrifted piece look expensive and intentional. Then I try to add colour, because of course I do, and that’s where things get a bit sideways. I talk through what I’m aiming for, why dye feels like a fun “easy upgrade” on paper, and how quickly it can go off-script when you’re working with mystery fabrics and big expectations. Along the way I share the tie-dye/dye options I mentioned (from beginner kits to more pro dyes), plus a few of my go-to tools and resources. And because Frocktails is as much about community as it is about outfits, I also shout out a couple of sewing YouTubers I met there—because meeting sewists in real life is just the best.
