About This Video

If you’ve ever wondered why your seams look a little “meh” even when your stitching is solid, this video is my gentle reminder that your iron is basically part of your sewing machine. I walk you through the difference between ironing and pressing (they’re not the same!), and how pressing—lifting and placing the iron instead of dragging it—keeps your fabric from stretching and helps everything look crisp and intentional. I also break down when I use steam vs a spray bottle, how I press seams so they lie flat (and stay flat), and the pressing tools that make the biggest difference: a wooden clapper for locking in a sharp seam, a tailor’s ham for curved areas, and a point presser for corners and tight spots. I talk about keeping your iron clean too, because a gunky soleplate can absolutely ruin your fabric at the worst possible time. The takeaway: slow down, press as you go, and your sewing instantly looks more professional—especially for upcycling and alterations where fit and finish are everything.
