In this video, I grabbed a thrifted knit sweater and gave it a whole new personality with reverse appliqué—one of those techniques that looks super high-end, but is honestly very doable at home. I start by tackling the fit first (because if a sweater doesn’t fit, it won’t get worn), and I walk you through simple, non-scary knit alterations so you can get a shape you actually love before you add any design details. Then we get into the really fun part: planning the reverse appliqué. A viewer suggested photocopying the sweater and cutting “windows” into the paper so you can audition different appliqué colours before you commit—and it is a total game changer. To keep everything neat and precise while sewing on a stretchy knit, I build my design in Canva and print it onto stick-on, wash-away stabilizer. It keeps the knit stable while you stitch, and then it rinses away when you’re done like magic.
