Whoops I let some cucumbers grow too long. I do have some watermelon and canteloupe going! My garden is a jungle and I am watching out for snakes. #garden

About This Video

Well, hello gardening friends—this one is a real-life summer garden tour, Louisiana heat and all. I’m out there admitting I’ve been neglecting things (don’t look at my grass), and you can totally tell: basil is going to seed, cucumbers are turning yellow, and my whole garden has basically become a jungle. But even in the chaos, there’s still a lot to love—bees are working the basil flowers, the ginger is getting big and about to bloom, and the sunflowers and zinnias are making the birds (especially the cardinals) very happy. I came out to grab “a cucumber for a salad” and ended up finding surprises everywhere—Tommy apple melons that literally fall off when they’re ready, multiple watermelons, and even volunteer pumpkins (pokey, and yes… squash bugs). I also share what I’m looking for before harvesting a watermelon, like a dried-up tendril, and I’m extra cautious walking through all the vines because I’m watching out for snakes. It’s hot, it’s wild, and it’s very much a “whatever happens happens” season—but hey, at least I got cucumbers this year. Happy growing.
