Well, hello there gardening friends. In this video I’m spending my Sunday doing one of my favorite kinds of “morning piddling” in the garden—potting up my little tomato starts for Zone 8A. My seeds took off really well, and I just can’t handle tomatoes staying crammed in those tiny starter cells. So I grabbed a big bag of Miracle-Gro soil to help them get started, filled up some bigger pots, and poked a quick hole down the middle with my finger so everything’s ready to go before I disturb the roots. I show how easy tomatoes are to split when you’ve got multiple seedlings in one cell—just let the plug fall out, be gentle, and they’ll usually separate without much fuss. Tomatoes are tough, and you can actually see how nicely the roots pull apart when they’re ready. My biggest goal is keeping their roots exposed for as little time as possible, so I prep all the pots first and pop each seedling right into its new home. After that, they go back inside under my grow lights, and I’ll keep raising the lights as they grow so they don’t get leggy. This is probably my last pot-up before planting out—unless I have to keep them inside longer and they start pushing toward rootbound again.
