This is both a good and a bad thing firstly it shows that the budget market is now extremely well developed and far ahead of where we could have ever dreamed it to be just 5 years ago. The fact that im talking about these being “bad” is a testament to how good the market is, as even the 3 headphones discussed in an unfavorable light are streaks ahead of similar-priced IEMs from big-name brands. The bad is that the companies are now latching onto influencers to push out fairly average IEMs. I get those influencer earphones to garner hype but are timeless; Blon and Tangzu have all shown that they can tune IEMs better than any of them; that is their profession, so why not let the engineers shine. I think it does indeed hype but not in a puch above its price way but instead as a redefinition of its price category.

About This Video

In this video I did a sub-$100 head-to-head shootout with four IEMs that landed on my desk in the same week: Tripowin Kailua (HBB collab), Tangzu FuDu (Divinus/Venus collab), Blon JoJo (Z Reviews collab), and the non-collab 7Hz Sonus. The big point here is simple: just because you see an “X” or a collaboration name slapped on the box, it has just as much chance of being a steaming tod as anything else. The market feels like it’s in a “throw everything at the wall and see what sticks” phase, and I don’t love seeing influencer names used to push fairly average releases. Sound-wise, three of these don’t make my recommendation list because they don’t do anything better than what’s already established at the price—stuff like the Moondrop Aria, Dunu Titan S, and especially the Queen of Audio Gimlet. Kailua is smooth and inoffensive but lifeless. FuDu is natural and easy to listen to, but the technical performance just isn’t there. JoJo is a mess for most people… but it’s also a guilty-pleasure bass cannon that actually has a purpose if you want a pure “slam” set. The one that “wins” the table for overall balance is the 7Hz Sonus: neutral-ish with a sub-bass bump, clear mids, great female vocals, and solid technical separation for the money.
