About This Video

This review is a weird one, because the Goldplanar GL30 makes absolutely no sense on paper… and then you listen to it and it’s like, oh. Oh wow. It’s got a full-range 28mm planar magnetic driver stuffed into what is basically a tennis-ball-sized “earphone,” and my first reaction pulling it out of the box was basically “oh Jesus, here we go again.” I’ve absolutely lambasted Goldplanar in the past, so I went into this expecting to hate it. Instead, it ended up being one of the best “earphones” I’ve heard—if you can live with the size and the fit quirks. Once I got the seal right (tip rolling is mandatory here), the GL30 came alive and started sounding more like a set of headphones or an ear-speaker: huge, natural, and ridiculously engaging. The bass is detailed and textured with good weight, the stage is massive, and the imaging/spacing feels like it’s coming from every angle. It handled everything I threw at it—from John Mayer to orchestral, metal, and reggae—without ever sounding like it was struggling. The big catch is practicality: it leaks sound, it’s heavy, and it’s not going to work for small ears. But if you’re mostly listening at home and you want something truly special and different, this is “going in the bag” for me.
