Warm Audio is probably the most controversial pro audio company out there right now, and this video is me trying to put a final bow on the whole conversation—without the weird tribalism. Every time I mention Warm, people assume I’m either attacking them (or the people using the gear) or I’m trying to sell you something. Neither is true. This is just my opinion based on my own meandering experience using a whole lot of their stuff in real sessions, and the main point is simple: if your gear helps you make the sounds you want, you’ve succeeded. Just make music. I talk about what Warm Audio does well—mainly price and generally solid QC—and where I think they miss. We’re in a “clone war” era where companies nail the aesthetics and imply “95% of the way there,” but sometimes that’s true and sometimes it’s not. I go piece by piece: the WA76 is decent but I prefer other 1176-style options (like the Lindell LiN76 or Black Lion Bluey). The WA47 is actually a strong buy around $1k even if it doesn’t really do the true U47 “zoom lens” thing. On the flip side, I think the WA73/1073-style stuff misses the mark for me, and I’d rather steer you toward better 1073 options (BAE) or even an API-style preamp (Warm WA12, Black Lion, or ideally CAPI in 500 series).
