You’ve probably heard this before: “All mics sound the same with the right EQ.” It’s one of the most common beliefs in audio, and it’s completely misunderstood. In this video, we’re breaking down the biggest microphone misconceptions I see all the time: Why EQ can’t make every mic sound identical Why “90% as good” is often just marketing Why small differences actually matter more than you think Why there is no “best” microphone, only the right one And why dynamic mics don’t magically fix bad rooms Yes, you can make a hit record on budget gear. But that's often not what we're talking about. The real question is: 👉 Do all microphones actually sound the same? If you’ve ever compared mics, looked at frequency response graphs, or wondered whether upgrading your gear actually matters, this video will give you a clearer, more honest answer. About This Video

If you’ve ever heard “all mics sound the same with the right EQ,” this video is me pushing back on that—hard. I’m seeing a rise in what I’ll call anti-influencer culture, and I get why it exists, but the black-and-white takes are getting people confused. The big misconception: you can EQ a sub-$300 condenser into a U87. Frankly, no. Yes, you can make a hit record on budget gear (people have), but that doesn’t mean there aren’t real differences between a $300 transformerless condenser and a $4,000+ legacy mic—and pretending otherwise is often just marketing dressed up as “truth.” Then I talk about why “small differences don’t matter” is also wrong. Audio is a world of marginal gains: mic choice, placement, performance, and a hundred little decisions stack up until your records start sounding like records. I also break down why there’s no “best” mic—only the right mic for the job—and I tell a real studio story where a U87 brought out harshness on a singer, and a Sanken ended up being the unanimous pick because it kept the openness without the problems. Finally, I address the dynamic mic myth: dynamics don’t magically fix bad rooms. They can hide the room temporarily because of proximity and tonal roll-off, but once you compress/EQ, that room comes right back. Treat your space, pick the right tool, and make the record by any means necessary—just don’t be a dick in the comments while we argue about it.
