Most tube mics I’ve used are generalists: they’ll sound pretty good on a lot of sources, but they don’t always absolutely crush one specific job. The Lewitt PURE TUBE is different. It’s clearly a specialist mic, and the “specialty” is vocals. In the video I walk through the exact questions I ask when I test a tube mic—overall tonal signature, transient behavior, what the tube is actually doing, and where I’d use it in a real session—and with this one, the answer is obvious once you hear the raw take. On vocals, I’m getting a presence lift with sparkle and shimmer up top, but it still has weight in the midrange where the tube harmonics live. The big takeaway is how little processing it needed to sound finished: a high-pass around 80 Hz, a tiny 1.5k dip, and an 1176 doing 5–10 dB of reduction. That’s it. I’m trying to preserve emotion instead of “stacking plugins” until the performance feels sterilized—pick mics, not fights. I also show the tradeoffs. On acoustic guitar, the transients can get pokey and the pick attack sticks out, so I ended up pulling some 7k, adding saturation/compression, and even using a tape-style tool to sand down transients. On top of that, the PURE TUBE’s 7 dB self-noise is wild for a tube mic, and the included magnetic pop filter, shock mount, and case are genuinely well thought out.
