Can you actually hear the difference between a $200 microphone and a $1300 microphone? I'm putting the AKG C114, AKG C214, and AKG C414 XLS head-to-head in a completely blind microphone shootout. No visuals. No bias. Just your ears. The AKG C414 has been a studio staple for decades, tracing its lineage back to the legendary AKG C12—a microphone known for its open, detailed top end and “larger-than-life” sound. But how much of that legacy actually carries over to more affordable options like the C214… or even the brand new C114? More importantly… 👉 Can YOU tell the difference? *The Mics:* The AKG C114 Large-Diaphragm Condenser Microphone: https://www.zzounds.com/a--3993776/item--AKGC114?siid=384192 The AKG C214 Large-Diaphragm Condenser Microphone https://www.zzounds.com/a--3993776/item--AKGC214?siid=62019 The AKG C 414 XLS 9-Pattern Condenser Microphone: https://www.zzounds.com/a--3993776/item--AKGC414XLS?siid=89272 *Download the Multitracks:* https://patreon.com/andrewchapmancreative Other Gear I Typically Use For Audio: (affiliated unless noted otherwise) My A Designs P1 Preamp: http://sweetwater.sjv.io/kO6NWN My Chandler TG2 Preamp: https://sweetwater.sjv.io/aOajEM My Interface: https://www.zzounds.com/a--3993776/item--ANEDISCRT8ORXSYN My Main Monitors: https://www.zzounds.com/a--3993776/item--NEUKH120II?siid=335650 My Headphones: https://www.zzounds.com/a--3993776/item--BEYDT770PRO250?siid=302076 Plugins: https://pluginboutique.com/?a_aid=691f3713a627d My Camera Gear: My Main camera: https://sweetwater.sjv.io/RGQarg My Main Lens: https://sweetwater.sjv.io/554z7L My Main On Camera Microphone: https://www.zzounds.com/a--3993776/item--RODVMNTG?siid=272904 My B Lens: https://sweetwater.sjv.io/qzPo2L My Softbox: https://amzn.to/3EyfA2Q My Video Lighting: https://amzn.to/4oISvMC Subscribe for real-world, no-hype recording insights: www.Youtube.com/@UC7erPUP_HjRQvLg53ck1_Aw Patreon: https://patreon.com/andrewchapmancreative Follow me on TikTok/IG: @andrew_chapman Business inquiries: andrewchapmancreative@gmail.com Timestamps: A Blind Shootout: 0:00 The C12 and why this matters: 0:37 The C414: 2:48 The C214 and the C114: 3:46 Blind Comparison Start Here: 4:49 Acoustic Guitar Sample: 5:24 Vocal Sample: 6:11 Spoken Word Sample: 6:48 THE REVEAL: 8:32

About This Video

Do you guys want to make people who bought a $1,300 microphone a little bit nervous? In this video I put three mics from the AKG “C” lineage into a completely blind shootout: the $229 AKG C114, the $400 AKG C214, and the $1,300 AKG C414 XLS. No visuals, no bias—just mic A/B/C on acoustic guitar, vocals, and spoken word so you can decide with your ears. I also give some context on why any of these mics even exist: the C12 in the 1950s was “magic” because it delivered an open, detailed, airy top end without falling apart, largely thanks to the CK12 capsule. Over time AKG evolved that idea into more practical, consistent designs like the 414, which became a studio workhorse on everything from overheads and room mics to vocals and even kick drum. At the end, I reveal which mic was which (A = C214, B = C114, C = C414 XLS), and I share a simple shopping tip for modern 414s: gold grille tends to be brighter than silver. I used the XLS here because I generally prefer a slightly more rounded-off top end.
