I took a little Chiayi day trip out to Guanziling (關子嶺) to check off another Taiwan hot spring experience—this time, the famous mud hot springs. Getting here took a bit of coordinating (public transport in this area is not as “show up whenever” as a lot of Taiwan), but it ended up being totally doable and honestly really pretty on the ride in. My first stop was the Fire and Water Spring (the bus stop translation literally said “Fountain of flame,” which made me laugh). I’d read online it can be a little underwhelming in person, so I kept my expectations low… and yeah, it’s a quick stop, but still a fun “nature is weird” moment. After that, I headed to King’s Garden Hot Spring Resort and basically lived my best slow-travel life for the day. They have a ton of different pools, plus mud facials and all these spa-style stations (I was very grateful for the map telling you what to do and in what order because otherwise I’d be so confused). I went on a Saturday since the tourist shuttle runs on weekends, and it wasn’t uncomfortably busy—just lively. My big takeaway: if you’re solo and relying on buses, weekends make the logistics way easier, but if you can drive, weekdays are cheaper (I saw it’s about 100 NTD less) and probably even more peaceful.
