About This Video

Hey guys, it’s Your Vet Amanda. In this video I’m taking you along on my very first work trip/continuing education (CE) course as a new grad veterinarian. I fly out to Vancouver (BC) for a veterinary dentistry CE, and I walk you through what CE actually is (yes, we have to do a certain number of hours every year after graduation) and why I chose dentistry for my first course. Day one is lecture-heavy—very ā€œback in student modeā€ā€”and then day two is a wet lab where we rotate through stations like instruments, dental radiographs, and extractions. The biggest takeaway (and my real talk moment) is that my dentistry training in vet school was extremely limited, and it was honestly the thing I felt least comfortable with going into practice. This course covered the basics—how to handle instruments properly, what grips are right, and the little nuances and tricks that make dentals so much easier. I even extracted my first tooth fully on my own, which was a huge confidence boost. A couple weeks later, I’ve already done a few extractions in practice and I’m so thankful I got this baseline training. My advice to new grads: when you’re negotiating a contract or choosing a clinic, look closely at their dentistry setup, equipment, and mentorship—and seriously consider working a dentistry CE into your first year so you don’t end up dreading dentals in general practice.
