About This Video

Hey guys — in this vlog I’m on my 4th year Primary Health Care rotation (basically general practice affiliated with OVC), and I’m doing something that feels a little wild: I’m operating on my own dog, Link, for his neuter. I know the reaction to that is pretty 50/50 (either ā€œAmanda you’re crazyā€ or ā€œthat’s so coolā€), so I walk you through why it made sense — Link was just over a year old, due to be neutered, and this is the clinic I already take him to while I’m in school. I take you through surgery day: updated weight for drug calculations, catheter/intubation setup, pre-med, opening gowns and instrument packs, and then the actual procedure. Huge shoutout to my best friend Elena for monitoring anesthesia — honestly I would’ve been more nervous to monitor than to operate — and Link’s anesthetic chart was ā€œso boringā€ in the best way because he was so steady. Afterwards, I update you two weeks post-op and break down the technique for anyone in vet med: open castration, isolating vessels, circumferential ligature + Miller’s knot, and then a simple continuous subcutaneous closure with an intradermal skin pattern (no suture removal needed). We did strict exercise restriction the first week, then slowly increased the second week, and Link basically went back to being his crazy puppy self shockingly fast.
