About This Video

In this new grad vet Q&A, I’m answering the questions I get asked the most now that I’ve officially been in practice for almost five months. I talk about where I’m working (small animal general practice at a private clinic about 45 minutes from Guelph), what the transition has actually felt like, and—yes—whether I even like it anymore. Overall I’m genuinely really happy where I ended up, mostly because the team environment is super supportive and it fits my lifestyle and long-term goals. I also break down what I looked for when job hunting as a fourth year: mentorship (even though I didn’t fully understand what I needed at the time), a clinic that feels like a close team, and work-life balance. For me, a 4-day work week was priority number one, and I share my exact schedule (Wednesdays off are elite). We also get into finances and salary expectations for new grads—how much it varies by location and type of practice—and my biggest tip: make an anonymous class spreadsheet to compare offers and benefits. Finally, I’m super real about imposter syndrome and decision fatigue. I’m making way more decisions per day than I ever imagined, and it’s normal to say “give me a second, let me look it up.” My biggest advice: be kind to yourself, take it day by day, and give yourself grace—because the roller coaster is very, very real.
