About This Video

Good morning guys — in this video I’m bringing you along for a day on my neurology rotation at OVC as a fourth year (phase 4) vet student. This rotation was one week long, and we were working alongside the residents and faculty seeing neurology service patients. Honestly, it was such a good rotation to start off on: super supportive team, a really nice “intro” into clinical year life, and (for an OVC rotation) it was pretty chill. I didn’t have any inpatients that morning, so I could actually grab coffee, eat breakfast, and enjoy the sunshine before disappearing into the back corner of the hospital. After our morning new consults, I walk you through the full neurologic exam I do on every new neuro patient (I demo it with Link). My biggest takeaway is that the neuro exam needs to be done the same way every single time so you don’t forget anything. I go through how I assess mentation + gait/posture, then cranial nerves (menace, PLRs, nystagmus, palpebral, nasal septum, facial symmetry/swallow), postural reactions, spinal reflexes (including medial and lateral toe pinches in the hind limbs), cutaneous trunci, perineal reflex, and finally vertebral column pain. Then we put it all together to localize the lesion and build differentials — which made me realize how much neuro I still had to learn, and how much this rotation cleared up for me heading into NAVLE studying.
