About This Video

In this video, I’m finishing up my little vlogging mini series and walking you through the way I edit and structure my YouTube vlogs—like, the actual thought process behind it. I share why I don’t believe vlogs are “random” at all (if you’re a nerd like me and you break them down, there’s totally a pattern), and I explain how I start with my key scenes first so the whole video stays on-topic and the story actually progresses. Then I layer in transition sequences (my B-roll) and music to help pacing, break up talking points, and make the experience feel more realistic—because I really do think it’s just as important to show things as it is to talk about them. After that, I talk about how I add style and personality while editing—especially through fonts. I’ll use a font that matches the vibe of a specific vlog (like a clean, serious one) but I also love mixing in handwritten fonts because it feels like I’m annotating little thoughts I didn’t say out loud. Then I do a full color grading walkthrough in Final Cut Pro using an adjustment layer, scopes, color wheels, curves, and hue/sat curves. It’s not the “professional” way (I literally say that), but it’s what’s gotten me through this past year—and if you want deeper color theory, I point you to Skillshare too.
