In this video I’m doing some cozy, relaxing maintenance on my carnivorous plant collection—mostly pinguicula (my beloved pings/pingdoms), plus my drosera and a couple nepenthes. I hadn’t really done much with them since summer, so it was definitely time for a cleanup: pulling off crispy leaves (and leaving anything that doesn’t come off easily), snipping old flower stalks, wiping out debris from planters, and topping up water. I also share how I think about seasonal care—under grow lights they’ll still grow and flower, but they can definitely “feel” winter through temperature changes, so I’m more cautious about letting things sit too wet when it’s cold. I repot a few pings into thrifted containers (because thrifting is honestly the best for finding cute ping vessels). My go-to setup is a layer of pon or pumice on the bottom (no fertilizer added), then a carnivorous bog mix on top, so it works like a simple wicking/self-watering situation. I also decide to fertilize lightly even though it’s winter—sometimes you have to learn from your own mistakes—and I feed the nepenthes pitchers with a few drops. It’s a reminder that these plants are way more “easy peasy” than people think: most of the time it’s just light + topping up water, and a little sit-down maintenance a few times a year makes everything look so much tidier.
