How did you make the faux moth shadowbox?

I thrifted the shadowbox frame months ago and finally put it to use with a fabric background I found while thrifting. I stapled the fabric onto the backing, then arranged the faux moths and faux florals until it felt layered but not too symmetrical. My hot glue plan failed (wrong glue sticks), so I ended up using school glue, waited for it to fully dry, and it actually held really well.

What kind of fabric did you use for the shadowbox background?

I wanted fabric because it looks softer and more finished than just paper, especially with the dark frame. I grabbed a piece while thrifting specifically for this project, and it matched the vibe near my Vittsjö shelf. The fabric also helped everything feel a bit more “cozy decor” instead of craft-project-y.

Why weren’t your pinguiculas thriving, and what did you change?

A lot of my pings weren’t getting enough light, so they were looking pale and kind of stretched out, especially in winter. I moved them into the bottom cubes of my Kallax where I have super bright puck lights. It’s less of a styled display right now and more of a “you need more light” rescue situation.

What soil mix do you use for pinguicula (pings)?

I use the bog mix from Brad’s Greenhouse because it’s easy and I only need a tiny amount each time. Pings have super shallow roots, so they really only need the top inch or two of substrate. Under that, I like a drainage layer that doubles as a little water reservoir.

How do you pot pinguiculas in glass containers?

I add a drainage layer first (I usually use pon, but in this video I used reused jumbo perlite because it was easy). Then I add a thin layer of my bog mix on top and pop the ping in—tweezers help because the roots are basically nothing. I fill the reservoir with filtered water (I used my ZeroWater pitcher) so they stay consistently moist.

How did you stop porous planters from making the shelf wet?

My understory labyrinth ping planters have porous bottoms, so they can leave water underneath. Someone suggested furniture felt pads, which is honestly genius, and I stuck a few on the bottom. It’s such a simple fix, and it makes the setup way less stressful.

How do you train Begonia lucerna to grow along a window?

I moved my lucerna behind the couch and used clear mini command hooks with twine to guide the branches. I’m aiming for one branch along the bottom of the window and one up the side to frame it. It’s super simple—loop twine around the vine, then onto the hook—and I’ll keep adding hooks as it grows.

Where did you place your variegated Rhaphidophora tetrasperma for wall training?

I decided to put it on my desk in the bedroom so it can eventually crawl up the wall. There’s light from a Soltech light nearby, and for now I added a small extra light because the vine isn’t high enough yet. Once it grows into the better light range, I’ll remove the extra boost and start pinning it up.
