About This Video

In this cane begonia care guide, I’m walking you through exactly how I care for my favorite type of begonia—the cane begonias—because they’re the ones I have the most experience with and honestly find the easiest. I show you how to ID them (that very straight, cane-like stem), chat about why I love the diversity in begonias (spots, no spots, dark leaves, velvety hybrids), and share what I’ve learned from growing everything from begonia maculata to my super dark fannyoser under my winter grow lights. The biggest takeaway is that cane begonias are thirsty, and most “humidity problems” are actually watering problems. I go over my lighting sweet spot (bright indirect, close to grow lights, but no scorching sun), my simple soil mix (potting soil + vermiculite), and why I’ve heavily leaned into semihydro and self-watering pots—my begonias in pon have been especially happy. I also cover staking (they really do need support), pruning and super-easy propagation, my fertilizer routine (don’t skimp—these are hungry), and basic temp ranges. Finally, we talk repotting cues and the one weird pest I’ve actually dealt with on begonias: scale (and yes, I chopped and restarted).
