There comes a point in a lot of our plant journeys where you start to hear the tempting call of anthurium—and it’s both exciting and terrifying. In this video, I’m basically here to de-intimidate the whole genus and give you five of my tried-and-true beginner anthurium that I grow in regular, ambient room conditions (for me that’s around 50% humidity, but I genuinely think 30–40% can work too if you stay on top of watering). I also talk through why anthurium aren’t as scary as they seem: you can get huge leaves without a moss pole, the new leaves “balloon” in (so satisfying), there’s tons of variety (especially if you like dark, almost goth foliage), and the roots are chunky and resilient—repotting doesn’t stress me out the way it can with other plants. I share what makes each plant easy in my home, where I keep them, and the kind of light they tolerate—everything from medium indirect “leftover” grow light to brighter natural window light. The five I highlight are: Anthurium pallidiflorum (my easiest, high-impact strappy velvet), a Doryaki silver x red crystallinum hybrid (hardy from seed, compact and adorable), Anthurium King of Spades (easy but slow—new leaves are an event), a luxurians hybrid (dark, textured statement beast), and Anthurium vittarifolium (another strappy hanger that fills out like a little shrub).
