About This Video

For about a week I tested the TTartisan 40mm f/2 L-mount on my Lumix S5, mainly because I was curious how much lens you can actually get for around $170. TTartisan sent it to me to review (I wasn’t paid, but I do get to keep it), and honestly I’ve been pretty impressed—especially when you consider how little of a gamble it is at this price. In the video I break down what you’re really getting in terms of build, handling, and image quality, and why price matters when you judge a lens like this. One of my favorite things is the size. It’s so small it fits in the palm of my hand, and that meant I actually brought it with me on a weekend trip to Oslo when I wasn’t even planning to shoot. The build is plasticky, but I don’t really mind that here because it keeps the setup light, discreet, and easy to carry. Image-wise, I shot everything wide open at f/2 and found it sharp enough where it matters, with really pleasing bokeh that feels a bit vintage and organic without being too “look at me.” At 40mm it’s also a great all-rounder—neutral enough for wide shots, mediums, and close-ups—so if you’re starting out and want one cheap full-frame prime, this is a very strong option.
