About This Video

Recently I’ve been experimenting with something you’re technically not “supposed” to do: shooting full frame with the Blazar Remus 35mm T1.6 1.5x, even though it’s a S35 anamorphic lens. I’ve used this lens for about a year—on personal projects, basically all my YouTube videos (it’s my main talking head lens), and even on a feature film. Normally on my Lumix S5 I’ll just use the APS-C crop and call it a day. But in this video I show what happens when you push the image circle in full frame mode: hard side vignetting, more barrel distortion, crazier bokeh, and a very unique vintage/trippy character. The big takeaway is that the vignetting is mostly on the sides, not top/bottom, so you can crop in (2.39:1, 2:1, or even 16:9) and still keep a lot of the vertical frame. With the Lumix S1 open gate, I can crop to 16:9 while trimming away the hard vignette and still get maximum use of the lens’ horizontal image circle. Wide open at T1.6, the in-focus areas stay surprisingly sharp, while the out-of-focus areas get this smeared, radial blur vibe that makes subjects pop. It’s not for corporate work, but if you want your image to stand out—horror, music videos, stylized shorts—this is a fun (and relatively cheap) way to get something that looks insane.
