About This Video

There’s been a lot of rumors that the Lumix S5 has a “hidden” 6K Open Gate mode, which would be pretty weird considering Lumix has never advertised it. In this video I test the mode people are talking about: the 6K burst option in manual photo mode, where you get a 6K 3:2 image at 30fps and it even records sound. At first I was genuinely surprised, because it really looks like you’re getting that tall 3:2 “open gate” style frame. But after testing, I found the catch: it’s not actually open gate in the true sense. When I compared it to the regular video modes, the 4K 6:9 mode was significantly wider than the “6K 3:2” burst footage, which tells me the 6K burst is basically a 3:2 crop of the video image, just with more resolution. And even if it was true open gate, I still wouldn’t use it for most of my narrative work because it’s locked to 30fps (I deliver in 25fps), and you lose the anamorphic features I care about—like internal de-squeeze monitoring and anamorphic IBIS. That said, if you need extra resolution and you already plan to crop to 3:2/4:3/1:1, it can still make sense—just don’t buy an S5 expecting real open gate.
