About This Video

In this video I go from a pretty ugly, dark setup to something actually usable — but I’m only using practical lights, meaning the house lamps I already have at home. Most of the time I don’t even use film lights for my YouTube videos or narrative work. I lean hard on natural light, but here in Norway during winter the light drops fast, so I wanted a simple way to light a talking head (or a scene) without buying anything expensive. I’m shooting on the Lumix S5 with an anamorphic lens (I mention I’ll end up with a 16:9 crop), starting at ISO 4000 and 2800K white balance, so yeah — it’s dark and you’ll get some noise. The main trick is building a key light from a normal lamp, then fixing the harshness with diffusion. I literally grab a bed sheet, tuck it in to control spill, and push the lamp back just enough to stay out of frame for the crop. After that I bring in a couple of background lamps for depth, kill any unwanted room lights, and plan to finish it with a grade, some noise reduction, and maybe power windows on the lamps. It’s not perfect, but it shows you can get a nice result with what you already own.
