About This Video

I’ve been working in low-budget feature filmmaking for quite a while now, and in this video I wanted to do the opposite of my “downsides” video and talk about why I actually love making films with practically no budget. I’ve made several low-budget features, like Good Boy (made for about $7,000) and Above the Knee, and I’ve also produced two more low-budget features this year—so these advantages are coming straight from real productions with limited resources. I break down six big upsides. First, if you’re doing this without getting paid and with nothing guaranteed, you’re usually doing it for the right reasons—and the people around you often are too, which creates a better environment. Then there’s the learning: a feature forces you to shoot more, work longer with actors, make more mistakes, and actually find your voice. Because the financial pressure is lower, success can simply mean finishing the film, and that freedom gives you room to experiment, fail, and learn. On top of that, low budgets often give you more creative control. I talk about how a weird concept like Good Boy might never get financed traditionally—but we could just make it, then let festivals and audiences decide. And finally: it proves you can make a film, which can lead to meetings, funding, and opportunities. Plus, it’s genuinely fun—and I wouldn’t trade the process (or the YouTube connection) for much.
