About This Video

In this video I compare three lenses at three very different price points, but at basically the same “do-everything” focal length: the TTArtisan 40mm f/2 ($168), the 7Artisans Spectrum 35mm T2 ($400-ish), and the Samyang Xeen 35mm T1.5 ($1,400–$1,500). I like 35–40mm so much because it’s a proper allrounder—honestly, in many ways that’s all you need, and most of the lenses I own live in that range. The point here is simple: what do you actually get when you spend more, and can you really tell the difference in real-world shooting? I talk about size, weight, handling, build, and the look you get—because for me that’s what matters when I’m actually out filming with a small setup like the Lumix S5. The TTArtisan is tiny, has autofocus, and gives me a subtle vintage vibe while still holding up surprisingly well wide open. The 7Artisans feels like a “proper” cine lens with a long focus throw and robust build, and the image is a bit more modern while still not clinical. The Samyang Xeen is big and neutral, and wide open I found it gets soft with a lot of chromatic aberration—plus the loose aperture ring has genuinely ruined shots for me. My takeaway: price doesn’t automatically buy you a better image, and practicality matters more than people like to admit.
