About This Video

This week on Filmatic I’m coming back from a work run that took us from DC to LA to Atlanta and finally Korea for a 2–3 day shoot. I wasn’t the DP on this one, but I was producing and basically there to jump in and keep the machine moving if anything went sideways—honestly that’s a big reason clients keep me around. Korea was dope: I got a little time for fried chicken, hit a rental house (Opticam), and we worked out of a massive studio space with a crew that was super efficient. In this video I break down how I think about traveling with film gear: bring the “brain” (in our case an Alexa 35 with Tribe7 Blackwing T-une lenses) and then lean on local rental houses and connections to fill in the gaps wherever you land. I also show my non-negotiables for staying organized—especially when you’re juggling follow focus parts, cables, drives, and filters. My main takeaway: simplify the kit, pack it so you can move fast, and don’t set yourself up to be everyone’s on-call file-sender while you’re still in the field. I’ll show you the pouches and patch boards I used, my filter case approach, and a simple FX3 “travel hack” that let me grab quick BTS and time-lapses without hauling a full tripod.
