About This Video

In this one I finally got to put the Canon EOS C400 up against two cameras a lot of you are always asking about: the ARRI Alexa 35 and the Sony FX3. I’m not going to pretend this is some lab-coat, super-scientific test—this is me trying to keep it as fair as possible on a real-world setup: matching native ISO, keeping the same f-stop, and using ND where needed so we’re not cheating exposure. Magnanimus Rentals out of Chicago sent me the C400 for the week, and we knocked this out at Downtown Studio Co., which is going to be a spot we use more for these kinds of shootouts. To keep the lens variable consistent, I ran the DZOFilm Vespid 2 primes across all three bodies—18mm, 24mm, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm, and 105mm—so you can see not only how the cameras compare, but also what those Vespid 2’s look like on each system. After the lens passes, I also walk through the dual/triple base ISO behavior: the C400’s triple base (800/3200/12800), the FX3 at 800 and 12800, and the Alexa 35’s base 800 plus Enhanced Sensitivity modes that we show at 3200 and 6400. Then I drop a bunch of side-by-sides so you can pixel peep and decide what you like best.
