About This Video

I finally got hands-on with the Canon EOS C50 and wanted to share my honest first impressions from the perspective of someone who’s been pretty happy living in the Sony FX3 world. I came up on Canon—C300, C100 (and the Mark II), plus years of 5D Mark II/III work—so seeing how far Canon’s cinema line has come is wild. This is a powerful 6K open-gate full-frame camera, and for the price, I genuinely think it’s worth the bucks if you’re looking to jump into the Canon side. In the video I show some simple A/B comparisons (nothing super scientific): I drop the footage into my NLE and apply each brand’s LUT for a solid 709-style look so you can judge the image for yourself. I also talk about a ridiculous-but-fun build: the C50 paired with the Canon 15–120 broadcast-style zoom, full zoom control, and a surprisingly sturdy handle setup (even without a cage). I recorded in XF-AVC 4:2:2 10-bit because my OWC CFexpress Type A-to-B adapter setup that works for my FX3 cards didn’t play nice here. Bottom line: the C50 is a fun, capable camera, and these days it’s honestly hard to “pick wrong” in the cinema category—lighting and workflow matter more than brand wars.
