About This Video

In this video I’m giving you an inside look at how I shot with the Canon C400, plus a little behind-the-scenes on my process. If you’ve been following the channel, you already saw me run the C400 in comparisons against the Alexa A35 and the FX3, and overall I think the results were solid—obviously the Alexa looks amazing out of the box, but I wanted to get real-world time with the C400 while I had it for about a week. Instead of doing a full short, I linked up with my homie Ricardo and we shot a quick teaser for a short film he’s developing. I built the C400 the way I’d actually run it on a job, even though the built-in monitor is one of the best benefits of the camera. I threw my Masterbuilt portrait primes on it (32, 55, 100) because I already know the grit, texture, and that swirly bokeh wide open—so it’s a good way to judge what the camera is really doing. Lighting was intentionally minimal: we shot in a green room at the Deluxe Theater in Houston using mostly the vanity mirror bulbs, cutting almost half on one side, then adding an Amaran F22C as subtle fill matched to the same color temp. I’ll show you quick looks straight from the camera with a basic LUT, then a second pass where I did my own tweaks, and I’ll wrap with my thoughts on the C400’s ergonomics and battery setup.
