I’m literally still in the theater—basically sitting in Ryan Gosling’s lap—because I just watched Project Hail Mary (2026), and I had to get my first thoughts out immediately. This was one of my most anticipated movies of 2026 because I loved the novel… like, favorite novel of all time level. As an adaptation, I think it’s pretty solid. They definitely streamline a lot: subplots get cut, and some of the heavier science gets trimmed down, but I get it—otherwise we’re talking a six-hour runtime (which, honestly, I’d be fine with). The big stuff that matters? The highlights, the major plot points, the characters, and especially the dynamic between Gosling and another character I’m not spoiling (even though the trailers kinda did—ugh). That camaraderie is what the book hinges on, and the movie hinges on it too, and I think they nailed it. It’s heartfelt, it’s funny, it’s genuinely entertaining, and I love the whole “two dudes in space trying to save their planets” vibe. On top of that, Lord & Miller bring some real sci-fi epic energy—at times it even gave me 2001: A Space Odyssey vibes—and in IMAX it looked awesome, especially with that digital-to-film transfer giving it some grain and heartbeat.
