For my 2026 Oscar predictions, I’m gonna be real: this year felt kind of weak for cinema. I liked plenty of movies, but we didn’t get that all-timer—no “Pulp Fiction” or “Shawshank” type of film that’s gonna live on for decades. So I pulled up Kalshi (a prediction market) to look at the live odds and then I broke down what I think is actually going to win—because the Oscars are as much about Hollywood politics and popularity as they are about “the best.” I start with Best Picture, where the odds heavily favor Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another. I enjoyed it—DiCaprio was awesome, the dark comedy worked, and Sean Penn is an over-the-top menace—but it’s not even close to my favorite PTA movie. I liked Sinners more (even if it’s basically From Dusk Till Dawn with a modern remix), and I think Michael B. Jordan’s dual performance is the kind of technical achievement the Academy loves, which is why I have him taking Best Actor. From there, I hit the categories I actually care about: PTA for Director, Penn for Supporting Actor, One Battle for Cinematography and Editing, Frankenstein cleaning up Production Design/Makeup, F1 better win Sound, and Avatar: Fire and Ash is the obvious Visual Effects pick.
