About This Video

Movie collecting just doesn’t feel the same anymore, and in this clip from my weekly live show I finally lay out why. I was watching Jeff Russo (Films at Home) talk about how the thrill is fading, and it hit me all over again: every year it feels like these little optical discs are getting phased out. Best Buy is done with physical media, Walmart’s section keeps shrinking, and more and more of the hobby is getting shoved online—boutique, niche, and way less fun than it used to be. For me, physical media was never just “content.” It’s the reason I started YouTube in the first place. I’m a hunter-gatherer with an iced coffee and a questionable breakfast sandwich, and I miss the days of leaving the house to chase down steelbooks and random finds. Streaming can’t replace that feeling—scrolling for an hour just to get hit with a $4.99 SD rental is criminal. If a movie doesn’t have a spot on my shelf, it genuinely doesn’t feel like it has a special place in my heart. So I’m switching up Flick Trips. Instead of only hitting Walmart for the same 25 titles with new cover art, I’m taking you with me into the grime—the thrift stores, Goodwills, pawn shops—because the mystery of “what am I gonna find?” is half the excitement. Physical media might be taking a gut punch, but I’m keeping it alive as long as I can.
