Universities are not teaching PCB design and for the ones that are, the programs are generally lacking in relaying the industry experience and requirements for people to succeed at work. If you do pick up PCB design and hardware design for your electrical engineering career, it will bump your salary by at least $40,000 over the course of your EE career. Even by $80k for some top tech companies in the USA. At the very least as long as you know design for manufacturing you can get into an entry level PCB design role as a recent EE graduate and get paid $75-$90k or even more. I know one of my students coming out of college got a $120k per year role because she know high-speed PCB design when I taught her at the Rochester Institute of Technology. Listen I worked as a power systems engineer (electrical engineering specialty), but it wasn't fulfilling and the pay was capped. So I took my hardware design skills and switched jobs to get a better experience for the skills I had and much better pay, but like an extra $20k per year. I'm not saying you won't be wildly successful as an EE without the skill, but it's an excellent skill to have and for so many reasons. And only EEs, computer engineers and physicists have the foundations to really do it like pros at this level.
