In this video I do a real, engineer-to-engineer review of Siemens Xpedition Standard (the Mentor Graphics / PADS Pro lineage) through the lens that actually matters for professional PCB work: the Constraint Manager. My opinion is simple—an ECAD tool is only as good as its constraint manager, because that’s what enforces requirements. If you miss requirements, you’re re-spinning the board anyway. So I walk through how constraints show up from schematic all the way into layout: net classes, clearances, impedance control, length matching, via limits, topology definitions, and even those pop-up image explanations that should honestly be standard in every pro tool. I also cover the day-to-day workflow: installation (A+—cloud install is way better than dongles), schematic capture and hierarchy navigation, library management (Library Manager, Symbol Editor, Part Editor), and DRC verification including pin-type checking (because “unspecified” pins are how you create avoidable debug pain). Then we get into layout features like stackup access through the constraint environment, routing capabilities (fanouts, interactive tuning like accordion/trombone, teardrops, group routing), and the analysis/reporting tools for design status and DRC. Finally, I talk signal integrity with HyperLynx integration (as an add-on), plus advanced capabilities like rigid-flex and MCAD co-design collaboration workflows that reduce the email ping-pong with mechanical teams. I also give my take on pricing: around $3k USD / ~$249 per month feels fair for what you get, with token-based add-ons if you need deeper SI/PI.
