The whole idea of this little mini series is in a way to explain why I got into wildlife photography. For years I've been passionate about art and drawing and my love of the outdoors and nature seemed a perfect fit. For a good while, I would ask other photographers for permission to use their images as reference. This didn't sit right with me and felt as though I was cheating in a way. I wanted to be involved in the whole process. Hence the photography started and I must say it took over from the art. Recently I've been itching to get the easel out so I decided to see if I could capture some images of one of our beautiful Sparrowhawks that regularly visit the hide. I also have some exciting news about a new ambassador role. Sit back, put thee feet up, grab a brew and see what we got upto this week. About This Video

Heat. Heat. How we doing, folks? This week’s video ended up going a different direction to what I planned, but it’s still a cracking one. I share some exciting news first: I’ve been asked to become an F-Stop Pathfinder ambassador. I’ve admired F-Stop kit for ages, and I was genuinely chuffed to be invited in. Just to be clear as well—this isn’t some “free stuff” situation. I still pay for the gear (yes, discounted), but for me it’s about using quality kit that actually works when you’re out in the field. I also take you into the hide to try and photograph one of our regular sparrowhawks for a little mini-series that explains why I got into wildlife photography in the first place—because I’ve always loved art and drawing, and I wanted to be involved in the whole process rather than borrowing other people’s images as reference. I talk about trying auto capture for the first time (it works, but it can feel a bit disengaged), then I get set up properly with the Nikon Z9 and 180–600 on a video head and tripod. Sparrowhawks are twitchy, you’ve got to be quick, but I manage to get a shot I’m really happy with—perfect as a drawing reference for Part 2.
