Morning folks—day 6 of the week-in-the-life and it’s one of those proper “graft” days. I’d planned to jump on the bike and check a new location, but the weather rolled in with a horrible bank of rain, fog and mist, so I binned that off and stayed close to home. Instead, I put some time into habitat creation for my ongoing badger project—because sometimes, to create an image, you’ve got to do a bit of prep. I’ve got a little patch near the drive where the badgers already cross, with the stream just below and a latrine over the other side, so it makes sense to try and pull them into a more photogenic spot. I cleared old telegraph poles and clutter, dragged in a big mossy boulder (that thing weighed half a ton), and transplanted ferns with plenty of root so it beds in naturally. The whole idea is to work with what you’ve got—ivy, roots, rotting wood—and build something that looks like it belongs there. Then I left a trail cam on permanently, with peanuts to slowly encourage them in, and the patience to let it all settle—might take hours, might take six months. Later on, it’s Mother’s Day so we had visitors, but we still got three trees planted before dark, staked for the wind, and I used a bit of that LHAS fertiliser to give them a start. Tomorrow’s the last day of the series—and we’re off to the Photography Show at the NEC.
