Day 3 of my “week in the life” at our little wildlife homestead in Wales was, frankly, a wash out. I started the morning thinking we’d get a couple of hours up in the hide, check the trailcam app, and see what’s been visiting the apples and hazelnuts. Hazelnuts had gone, apples were still sat there untouched (cheeky!), and it was a proper minging start. Still, if you’re in Wales and the weather’s grim, you wait five minutes and it’ll change… sometimes. Up at the hide I ended up getting distracted by a cracking natural perch I’d walked past a hundred times — a dead bit of hawthorn that looked absolutely spot on. I set it up as another option for the sparrow, because little tweaks like that can make a massive difference when you’re running a camera trap while you crack on with other jobs. Then the wind did what wind does: it blew my action cam over and cracked the protective lens. That killed any filming in the rain, so I pivoted back to indoor jobs — painting bird boxes, sorting orders, and cutting/stitching mats and bean bags. It’s a good reminder that wildlife photography (and homestead life) is often just adapting to what the day throws at you.
