New Year’s Day, I headed up into the Welsh mountains with my cousin Rick (Rick T Outdoor Adventure) for a two-night wild camp that was also a proper photography recce. I didn’t even bring the camera for this one—this was about getting eyes on a new area, learning the ground, and doing it the right way. I had my binoculars with me (that’s the real “camera” on a recce), and we spent the day navigating storm-damaged woodland, picking a safe camp spot away from widow makers, and getting a low, wind-shedding tarp setup dialled in. Overnight the weather turned and the next day the snow came in far harder than forecast. Visibility dropped, the terrain got sketchy (deep ditches and knee-deep holes), and it quickly became obvious that plans for getting up high and looking for short-eared owls weren’t happening. The big takeaway from this trip is simple: there’s no time wasted out in nature, but you’ve got to adapt. We had a proper chat, looked at the road conditions, and made the call to bail before we got stuck with no phone signal. We broke camp, buried the fire pit, left no trace, and got out safely—sometimes that’s the best decision you’ll make all weekend.
