How we doing, folks? In this one I’m stuck in the barn because the weather’s an absolute stinker, so it’s not even worth getting the camera out. Instead, I show you a dead simple conservation DIY: making an internal barn owl nest box from an old tea chest. This is the type that goes inside a barn or building, so it doesn’t need to be massively weatherproof—just strong, safe, and easy to maintain. I run through the whole process from a battered tea chest with sharp metal edging to a solid, usable box: clean it out, check for nails/screws, knock down sharp edges, then consolidate it with a new plywood end (410mm x 510mm) and a new base (650mm). After that I build a proper access door for cleaning and ringing, cut a 5-inch entrance hole (rounded top), and add an exercise platform around 6 inches wide so the chicks have somewhere sensible to sit. I also explain why I’m doing it—volunteering with the Montgomeryshire Barn Owl Group—and why it’s worth giving something back when barn owls are up against wet weather, habitat loss, and old barns disappearing.
