When it comes to garden bird photography well it generally involves feeders. At this time of year there is an abundance of small birds gathering around the bird feeders and this can give us some amazing chances to grab some great images. If you want to maximize your chances of turning great images into awesome images you need to capitalise on the situation. Hanging your feeders off a structure that is manmade and artificial will not help and so here is an easy project that anyone can undertake. Join me as we take a wander in the woods, do a bit of scavenging and construct what i consider to be the ultimate feeder hanger for garden bird photography. 2026 WILDLIFE CALENDARS * NOW AVAILABLE* FIND THEM ON THE TRAGOPAN UK WEBSITE TRAGOPAN UK WEBSITE https://tragopan-shop.uk HIDE WEBSITE https://simoneardleyphoto.wordpress.com BUY ME A COFFEE WEBSITE https://buymeacoffee.com/simoneardley ANDY GREEN CAMERA PERCH https://pondandperchwildlife.co.uk/product/camera-perch/ FOLLOW US ON SOCIAL MEDIA Get updates or reach out through social media! About This Video

Morning folks. In this video I’m basically making the most of being a bit confined to barracks with the lane iced up — and that’s where garden bird photography comes into its own. I show you why I’m not a fan of photographing birds sat on feeders (it just looks ridiculous), and instead how I build a natural-looking feeder perch that gives you loads more chances of proper images: birds landing, checking the area, and perching on interesting bits of timber before they drop onto the food. I take you for a wander in the woods to scavenge dead (but not rotten) oak, looking for naturally weathered ends and a central pole with a V in it. Back home, I talk through the practical stuff: digging it in solid, pre-drilling seasoned oak so you don’t snap screws, and setting the perch at the right distance for your hide and lens. I also cover what I feed (mostly sunflower hearts) and a little trick with peanut nuggets drilled into a log to keep birds working. Then we get in the hide and I run through the shooting logic: fast shutter speeds for small birds, managing ISO in dull snowy light, and the hidecraft side — slow lens movements, pick a perch, be patient, and let the birds do their thing. I finish with what I’d tweak next time: longer top limb, cleaner backgrounds, and a simpler design that avoids birds being obscured by crossing branches.
