Morning folks — day 2 of my “week in the life” at our little wildlife homestead. It starts the same way it usually does: porridge on, dogs fed, then it’s boots on and up the hill to top up the bird feeders and check the cameras. Not much on the bird cam (just a couple of magpies), but the badger cam was a different story — loads of visits and it’s proper lovely to see them coming through and “filling their boots” overnight. I also nipped out to grab a bargain off Facebook Marketplace (you’ve got to strike while the iron’s hot, haven’t you?) — a pack of live edge larch boards that’ll come in handy for future builds. While I was out I did a bit of “boots on the ground” work too, knocking on a door to secure a new permission near a crag and cliff face. Could be a cracking spot for birds of prey. Back at the shepherd’s hut, it was head-scratching time with the stove. I unboxed the Salamander Hobbit multi-fuel stove, worked out clearances, and started planning a proper raised base with a non-combustible (quarry tile) hearth and an integrated log store. Then I got the LVT flooring down — my knees remembered why I used to hate fitting floors — and finished the day by putting some apples down near the badger run to see if they’ll take them.
