About This Video

Lighting is probably the most important part of making YouTube videos, and in this video I break down a few simple ways to go from flat and boring to aesthetic and cinematic without overcomplicating it. I start with the gear side because, yeah, buying lights isn’t as exciting as buying cameras and lenses—but it’s worth investing in at least one good light and a softbox. I show my main setup using a GVM LED light paired with a SmallRig softbox as my key light, and I also talk about cheaper Amazon softbox kits that can absolutely get you started as long as you’re using soft light. From there, I walk through my actual process: I turn off every other light in the room (and block windows if needed) so I’m in full control. I place my key light at about a 45° angle for a more dramatic look (Rembrandt lighting), and I keep my key at 5600K (daylight). Then I add depth with practical lights in the background (warm around 2700K), and if I want that extra separation, I’ll throw in a subtle hair light matched to the warm background. I also show an alternative one-light option (clamshell lighting), even though it’s not personally my favorite.
