In this video I’m talking about the Sony 24mm f/2.8 full-frame lens for Sony E-mount, and why I genuinely think it’s the perfect travel lens. I just got back from my first trip to Europe (Paris and Italy), and this was the one lens I used to take literally thousands of photos. Going into the trip, I was trying to keep my kit as small as possible because I knew I’d be walking a ton, and even my beloved Sigma 24-70 felt like overkill when I’m basically living at 24–35mm anyway. What surprised me most was how tiny this lens is. It’s only 162g compared to my 24-70 at 830g, and that makes a massive difference when I’m carrying my camera on a Peak Design Capture Clip. I also explain why I’m totally fine with it being “only” f/2.8: at 24mm I’m mainly shooting architecture and landscapes, usually in daylight and often stopped down to something like f/9 or f/11, so the aperture just isn’t the dealbreaker people make it out to be. I also share the one real limitation I felt on the trip: a few moments where I wanted more reach. The a7 IV’s 33MP gives you room to crop, but it still wasn’t always enough, and it made me wonder if something like a compact 24-50 could be a better one-lens option for some people.
