About This Video

Sony just announced the a7V, and if you’re an a7IV user like me, the first question is obvious: is it worth upgrading? In this video I break down why, for my use (YouTube, family stuff, side projects, plus a lot of landscapes and portraits), the answer is no… at least for now. I’ve shot on the Sony a7IV for years and it’s been a fantastic hybrid camera for both photo and video, so the bar for an “upgrade” has to be pretty high. On the photo side, the a7V is a legit step up if you shoot fast-moving subjects. Pre-capture is awesome, and the partially stacked 33MP sensor unlocking up to 30fps is a big deal for wildlife, sports, action, weddings—anything where timing is everything. You also get the newer AI-driven autofocus/auto white balance improvements, but honestly, I don’t find the a7IV autofocus bad by any means. On the video side, the upgrades that stand out to me are uncropped 4K60, the higher second base ISO (8,000 vs 3,200 on paper), and better stabilization from what I’ve seen. I also talk about why I personally don’t care about open gate here. Bottom line: the a7V looks great, but I can’t justify the extra money when the a7IV is still more than enough camera for what I do… even though, let’s be honest, I’ll probably end up upgrading anyway.
